Does my Dutch SIM work in the UK without extra cost?

EU roaming law no longer covers the UK, but most Dutch providers still include it; Odido and Simyo do, for example. Check your own plan before travelling.

Is Switzerland included in Dutch roaming?

Not by law. Some providers include it (Simyo lists it), others only on premium plans (Odido on some Unlimited plans) or charge separately.

Roaming with a Dutch mobile plan: EU, UK, Switzerland and calling home

With a Dutch plan you use your bundle at no extra cost in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and, since 1 January 2026, Ukraine and Moldova. The UK and Switzerland are not covered by EU law; whether they're included depends on your provider. Calls from the Netherlands to other EU countries are capped at €0.19 a minute.

Short answer

As of 29 September 2026: under the EU "roam like at home" rules you use your Dutch minutes, texts and data at no extra cost in all EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and, since 1 January 2026, Moldova and Ukraine (Your Europe, Council of the EU). The UK and Switzerland are outside these rules, so it depends on your provider: Odido includes the UK in its EU zone, but Switzerland only on some Unlimited plans (Odido); Simyo lists both as included (Simyo). Calling or texting another EU country from the Netherlands is a separate matter: that is capped at €0.19 per minute and €0.06 per SMS, excluding VAT (European Commission).

Where can you use your Dutch bundle at no extra cost?

In the EU/EEA plus Moldova and Ukraine by law; elsewhere only if your provider chooses to include it.

Can you use a Dutch SIM permanently abroad?

Not indefinitely if you mostly live abroad. Operators look at your use over a 4-month period. If you spend more time abroad than in the Netherlands and use more abroad than at home, the provider may charge a small regulated surcharge (Your Europe). Odido puts it like this: if you are in the EU for 4 months or longer and use more there than in the Netherlands, it counts as unreasonable use (Odido).

Unlimited plans: providers may cap roaming data. Odido's Unlimited plans have monthly EU data limits of 40 to 75 GB, depending on the tier (Odido).
Cheap prepaid: operators may also limit roaming data on very cheap prepaid credit (Your Europe).
Cross-border commuters: if you live in the Netherlands and regularly work in Belgium or Germany, you are fine as long as most of your use is at home.

How much does it cost to call your home country from the Netherlands?

To other EU countries: at most €0.19 per minute and €0.06 per SMS, excluding VAT. This cap applies until 30 June 2032 (European Commission). It is separate from roaming: "unlimited minutes" usually cover Dutch numbers only. Odido says calls from the Netherlands to EU numbers usually fall outside the bundle, although some plans include EU minutes (Odido).

Receiving calls while you roam in the EU costs nothing extra (Your Europe). To countries outside the EU there is no cap. Internet calls (WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime) use data only and are usually the cheapest option. Dutch providers also sell country bundles; see EU bundles for calling abroad (in Dutch).

Don't call back unknown foreign numbers

A missed call from an unknown number abroad can be call-back fraud (wangiri). Ringing back can be expensive. If you don't recognise the number, don't call back.

How do you avoid a high bill outside the EU?

Turn off data roaming in your phone settings before you leave, and only turn it on when you have a bundle.
Buy a travel bundle from your provider, or a local SIM or eSIM data plan at your destination.
Use Wi-Fi for calls and downloads; download maps for offline use.
Set a spending limit for out-of-bundle costs if your provider offers one.
