Can I get internet in the Netherlands for 3 months?

Yes. A month-to-month 5G router such as Odido Klik&Klaar (€26 a month plus €20 one-off) or a KPN fixed contract you can cancel monthly both work. Many furnished rentals already include internet.

Is there pay-as-you-go home internet in the Netherlands?

Not as such; home internet is a subscription. The closest options are a monthly cancellable 5G router or a prepaid SIM with lots of data used as a hotspot.

Can I take a Dutch 5G router to another address?

Odido Klik&Klaar can be used anywhere in the Netherlands, including holiday homes and boats, but not abroad. KPN's 5G-Internet Thuis is meant for a fixed address without good fixed internet.

Do I need a BSN for temporary internet?

No. Telecom providers may not use your BSN. You need an address, ID and usually a euro bank account; prepaid needs none of these.

Staying a few weeks or months? Use your phone's hotspot or a prepaid SIM for the first weeks, and a month-to-month 5G router such as Odido Klik&Klaar (€26 a month plus €20 one-off, up to 300 Mbit/s, unlimited data) for longer. KPN also offers fixed internet you can cancel monthly, without its usual discounts. A 1- or 2-year contract only pays off if you stay at least that long.

Short answer

As of 29 September 2026: for a stay of a few weeks, a SIM-only or prepaid plan with lots of data used as a hotspot is usually enough. For a few months, a month-to-month 5G router is the easiest option: Odido Klik&Klaar costs €26 a month plus €20 one-off, offers up to 300 Mbit/s with unlimited data and can be cancelled monthly (Odido). KPN's 5G-Internet Thuis is meant for addresses without good fixed internet and has a fair-use limit of 20 GB a day, after which speed drops to 10 Mbit/s until midnight (KPN). If you want fixed fibre or DSL, KPN lets you choose a monthly cancellable contract, from €45.50 a month in January 2026 but without the discounts of a longer contract (Keuze.nl). First check whether internet is already included in your rent.

What are the options for temporary internet?

How does 5G home internet work?

A modem with a SIM card receives internet over the mobile network and turns it into Wi-Fi. You plug it in; no technician and no fixed line are needed. The two national offers differ considerably:

Is a phone hotspot enough?

For a short stay with one or two devices, often yes. A large or unlimited SIM-only bundle, or a prepaid SIM bought on arrival, covers browsing, email and some streaming. Keep in mind that Netflix recommends 5 Mbit/s for Full HD (Netflix), which mobile networks deliver easily, but data use adds up: unlimited plans have fair-use rules. For daily video calls and several people, a separate router is more comfortable.

What should you check in short-stay housing?

Is internet included? Furnished apartments, serviced apartments and student rooms often include internet in the rent or service costs. Ask for the speed and whether it is shared Wi-Fi.
Is there a fibre box or cable socket? If you do want your own fixed line, that decides whether installation is quick; see how to get internet as an expat.
Registration: staying 4 months or less, you don't register as a resident but can get a BSN through the non-residents register (RNI) (Government.nl). You don't need a BSN for telecom.

Leaving before the contract ends
