Internet in Groningen for expats: fibre, cable and providers (2026)

As of 29 September 2026: in Groningen, KPN builds most of the fibre. KPN says 71% of Groningen homes are connected to its network; according to OOG that was 55,000 addresses in March 2026. Noordoost, Selwerd, Oud-West, Oosterpark, Oud-Zuid, Vinkhuizen and Hoogkerk are finished; Beijum and Noorddijk were next, and the city centre is planned for early 2027. KPN's network is open, so you choose from providers such as KPN, Odido, Youfone and Budget Thuis. Ziggo has cable on about 97% of addresses (providers.nl), which makes it the fast option in the centre for now. Many students rent rooms where internet is included.

Status as of 29 September 2026, checked against the sources at the end of this article. Fibre networks expand street by street and providers come and go; the address check for your own home always has the final word.

Mainly KPN's open fibre network and Ziggo's cable. According to providers.nl a second fibre network is present in some neighbourhoods such as Selwerd and Paddepoel, which the site attributes to Open Dutch Fiber; ODF itself doesn't list Groningen among its projects (ODF, checked 29 September 2026), so don't count on it.

Early 2027, according to KPN's planning in March 2026. KPN told OOG (4 March 2026) that 55,000 Groningen addresses were connected, with more than 1,150 kilometres dug; that work in Beijum would start in April 2026, followed by Noorddijk; and that the city centre would follow early the next year. Schedules can shift.

Until then, if you rent in the centre, Ziggo cable is usually the fastest option, and DSL over KPN's old copper network the slower fallback. KPN reports 71% of homes on kpn.com.

Yes: according to providers.nl, Ziggo cable reaches about 97% of Groningen addresses. In the centre, where fibre only arrives in early 2027, cable is often the fastest option. Only Ziggo sells internet over the cable network in Groningen (Vodafone sells the same Ziggo internet with its mobile plans).

Downloads on cable are fast (up to 2 Gbit/s according to Ziggo), but uploads are much lower than on fibre, which matters for video calls and large uploads. See fibre or cable internet.

Usually not in an ordinary rental: there you arrange internet yourself. It is typically included in student rooms, shared houses, furnished short-stay apartments and buildings with a collective network, charged as service costs (servicekosten) at actual cost with an annual statement (Huurcommissie). The rules: internet included in your rent.

Often, yes. SSH Student Housing, which rents rooms in Groningen among other cities, says all its Short Stay rooms include wifi, with contracts from one to twelve months (SSH). In shared houses in Selwerd, Paddepoel or Corpus den Hoorn, sharing one subscription is usually cheapest; according to providers.nl you can often choose from six to eight providers there. Ziggo is the only large provider that says it has an English-speaking customer service team available 24/7; with the others you can manage in English, but most of their websites are in Dutch. What the providers say on their English pages:

Yes, but not with the usual 1- or 2-year deals. Odido Klik&Klaar costs €26 a month plus €20 one-off, gives up to 300 Mbit/s with unlimited data over Odido's 5G network and can be cancelled monthly (Odido, checked 29 September 2026). KPN offers fixed internet you can cancel monthly, from €45.50 a month in January 2026 but without the discounts of a longer contract (Keuze.nl).

A provider that is "available in Groningen" is not necessarily available in your street. In Vinkhuizen you are on KPN fibre, in the centre on cable or DSL for now.
