Internet in Haarlem for expats: fibre, cable and providers (2026)

As of 29 September 2026: Haarlem has two fibre networks, KPN and Open Dutch Fiber (ODF). KPN says 87% of Haarlem homes are connected to its network. ODF has built since 2021 in Haarlem-Zuidoost (including Schalkwijk, the Zuiderpolder and the Amsterdamse buurt) and later in Zuidwest. In November 2024 about 35,000 households could choose from both networks; the centre and Haarlem-Noord have KPN only (Haarlem105). Both networks are open. Ziggo cable reaches only about 79% of addresses (internetpostcodecheck.nl), so in part of the city fibre is the only fast fixed option.

The split comes from a survey by Haarlem105 (29 November 2024): about 35,000 households could choose between KPN and ODF, 30,000 only KPN (mainly the centre and Noord) and 10,000 only ODF. KPN has kept building since, so some ODF streets now have KPN as well.

Because the two network companies are not required to dig together. Haarlem105 described streets being opened twice in the same year, first by ODF and then by KPN, which wants to connect the whole city. The upside for you: in a large part of Haarlem you can choose between two networks, and so from more providers.

ODF announced in July 2021 that it would connect about 28,000 households in Haarlem-Zuidoost, starting in the Zuiderpolder (Open Dutch Fiber). According to internetpostcodecheck.nl, about 90% of addresses can now get fibre.

Yes: according to internetpostcodecheck.nl, Ziggo cable reaches about 79% of Haarlem addresses, fewer than in most big cities, so on some addresses fibre is the only fast fixed option. Only Ziggo sells internet over the cable network in Haarlem (Vodafone sells the same Ziggo internet with its mobile plans).

Downloads on cable are fast (up to 2 Gbit/sGigabit per seconde: 1000 Mbit/s. according to Ziggo), but uploads are much lower than on fibre, which matters for video calls and large uploads. See fibre or cable internet.

Usually not in an ordinary rental: there you arrange internet yourself. It is typically included in student rooms, shared houses, furnished short-stay apartments and buildings with a collective network, charged as service costs (servicekosten) at actual cost with an annual statement (Huurcommissie). The rules: internet included in your rent.

In Haarlem's old centre many people live in upstairs flats or apartments in older buildings, where the connection inside the building often goes through the owners' association or landlord. DUWO also has student housing in Haarlem (DUWO); in its complexes internet is often supplied by Ziggo or another provider (DUWO).

Ziggo is the only large provider that says it has an English-speaking customer service team available 24/7; with the others you can manage in English, but most of their websites are in Dutch. What the providers say on their English pages:

Yes, but not with the usual 1- or 2-year deals. Odido Klik&Klaar costs €26 a month plus €20 one-off, gives up to 300 Mbit/sMegabit per seconde: de eenheid voor internetsnelheid. 8 Mbit/s is 1 MB per seconde. with unlimited data over Odido's 5G network and can be cancelled monthly (Odido, checked 29 September 2026). KPN offers fixed internet you can cancel monthly, from €45.50 a month in January 2026 but without the discounts of a longer contract (Keuze.nl).

A provider that is "available in Haarlem" is not necessarily available in your street. In Schalkwijk you often have both KPN and ODF; in the centre and Noord you are on KPN.
