Internet in Utrecht for expats: fibre, cable and providers (2026)

As of 29 September 2026: Utrecht has three fibre networks: KPN, Open Dutch Fiber (ODF) and, in Maarschalkerweerd and Mereveld, DELTA. The municipality's goal is fibre for the whole city by 2027. KPN says 52% of Utrecht homes are on its network; ODF says it is connecting more than 100,000 homes across all districts, including the historic centre. According to providers.nl about 70% of addresses had fibre in May 2026. Ziggo cable reaches about 84% of addresses, fewer than in most big cities, so check your address before you sign a lease.

Status as of 29 September 2026, checked against the sources at the end of this article. Fibre networks expand street by street and providers come and go; the address check for your own home always has the final word.

KPN and ODF are the two big fibre networks, and in part of the city they lie side by side. The municipality names them as the two companies bringing fibre to the city (municipality of Utrecht).

ODF says on its Utrecht project page that construction began in De Meern and Veldhuizen and has since spread to all districts. Where both KPN and ODF are present, you have the widest choice of providers.

Yes, since ODF's two-year project in 2024 and 2025. According to the Binnenstadskrant Utrecht (7 May 2024), ODF laid 400 kilometres of fibre cable along a 46-kilometre route to reach all of the roughly 11,000 addresses in the centre, starting around the Bleekstraat. Before that, most centre residents relied on Ziggo cable.

If you rent a flat in a listed canal house, the connection inside the building can take extra work; ask the installer where the fibre will come in. In apartment buildings the owners' association (VvE) decides on work inside the building. KPN keeps building in parallel, and the municipality spaces works by different companies in the same street about a year apart (municipality of Utrecht).

Yes: according to providers.nl, Ziggo cable reaches about 84% of Utrecht addresses, fewer than in most big cities, so on some addresses fibre or DSLInternet via het koperen telefoonnetwerk. Trager dan glasvezel en kabel. is the only fixed option. Only Ziggo sells internet over the cable network in Utrecht (Vodafone sells the same Ziggo internet with its mobile plans).

Downloads on cable are fast (up to 2 Gbit/sGigabit per seconde: 1000 Mbit/s. according to Ziggo), but uploads are much lower than on fibre, which matters for video calls and large uploads. See fibre or cable internet.

Usually not in an ordinary rental: there you arrange internet yourself. It is typically included in student rooms, shared houses, furnished short-stay apartments and buildings with a collective network, charged as service costs (servicekosten) at actual cost with an annual statement (Huurcommissie). The rules: internet included in your rent.

Student housing is where internet is most often included. SSH Student Housing, which rents rooms in Utrecht, says all its Short Stay rooms include wifi, with contracts from one to twelve months (SSH). For regular rooms and private rentals, check the listing or ask.

Ziggo is the only large provider that says it has an English-speaking customer service team available 24/7; with the others you can manage in English, but most of their websites are in Dutch. What the providers say on their English pages:

Yes, but not with the usual 1- or 2-year deals. Odido Klik&Klaar costs €26 a month plus €20 one-off, gives up to 300 Mbit/sMegabit per seconde: de eenheid voor internetsnelheid. 8 Mbit/s is 1 MB per seconde. with unlimited data over Odido's 5G network and can be cancelled monthly (Odido, checked 29 September 2026). KPN offers fixed internet you can cancel monthly, from €45.50 a month in January 2026 but without the discounts of a longer contract (Keuze.nl).
