Internet in Leiden for expats: fibre, cable and providers (2026)

As of 29 September 2026: in Leiden, KPN and Open Dutch Fiber (ODF) build fibre. KPN agreed with the municipality to offer every home a free connection, started in Leiden-Noord in January 2022 and in the historic centre in April 2023, and now says 80% of Leiden homes are connected. ODF is connecting more than 30,000 households in Leiden-Zuid (Boerhaave, Mors, Stevenshof, Bos and Gasthuis districts). Both networks are open, so in parts of Zuid you can choose between two networks. Ziggo has cable on about 88% of addresses (internetpostcodecheck.nl). Many students and researchers live in rooms where internet is already included.

Status as of 29 September 2026, checked against the sources at the end of this article. Fibre networks expand street by street and providers come and go; the address check for your own home always has the final word.

KPN covers the whole city and ODF covers Leiden-Zuid; where they overlap you have the most choice.

Yes, via KPN, although the original schedule slipped. In December 2021 the municipality announced that KPN subsidiary NEM would start in Leiden-Noord in January 2022, that every home would get a free, no-obligation connection and that the whole city would be finished in early 2025 (Sleutelstad, December 2021). Work in the historic centre began on 17 April 2023, with KPN expecting to need about eighteen months; everyone gets a connection, even without a subscription, so the streets don't have to be opened again later (Sleutelstad, April 2023).

KPN now reports 80% of homes on kpn.com; internetpostcodecheck.nl puts fibre availability at about 70% of addresses. The figures differ partly because one counts homes and the other all addresses.

Yes: according to internetpostcodecheck.nl, Ziggo cable reaches about 88% of Leiden addresses. Only Ziggo sells internet over the cable network in Leiden (Vodafone sells the same Ziggo internet with its mobile plans).

Downloads on cable are fast (up to 2 Gbit/sGigabit per seconde: 1000 Mbit/s. according to Ziggo), but uploads are much lower than on fibre, which matters for video calls and large uploads. See fibre or cable internet.

Usually not in an ordinary rental: there you arrange internet yourself. It is typically included in student rooms, shared houses, furnished short-stay apartments and buildings with a collective network, charged as service costs (servicekosten) at actual cost with an annual statement (Huurcommissie). The rules: internet included in your rent.

Leiden is a university city where many international students and researchers live in rooms or student complexes. DUWO has more than 33,000 rooms across its cities, including Leiden (for example Campus Leidse Schans) (DUWO); in a large share of its complexes Ziggo supplies internet, elsewhere another provider does or you arrange it yourself (DUWO). Ziggo is the only large provider that says it has an English-speaking customer service team available 24/7; with the others you can manage in English, but most of their websites are in Dutch. What the providers say on their English pages:

Yes, but not with the usual 1- or 2-year deals. Odido Klik&Klaar costs €26 a month plus €20 one-off, gives up to 300 Mbit/sMegabit per seconde: de eenheid voor internetsnelheid. 8 Mbit/s is 1 MB per seconde. with unlimited data over Odido's 5G network and can be cancelled monthly (Odido, checked 29 September 2026). KPN offers fixed internet you can cancel monthly, from €45.50 a month in January 2026 but without the discounts of a longer contract (Keuze.nl).

A provider that is "available in Leiden" is not necessarily available in your street. In the Stevenshof you may be on ODF and possibly KPN, in Leiden-Noord on KPN.
